Instagram, TikTok and many other apps do not accept GIFs as posts — but they accept videos. Converting a GIF to MP4 solves that, and as a bonus the file is usually a tenth of the size.

Rekreate's free GIF to MP4 converter turns any animated GIF into an MP4 that plays everywhere, or a WebM for the web.

Why use this free GIF to MP4 converter

Convert GIF to MP4

An MP4 plays on every phone, computer and social app.

In any modern browser

Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox all work. There is no app, plugin or extension to install — the processing happens on our servers, so an old laptop is as fast as a new one.

Safe, private and free

No account, no sign-up

Open the page and use it. There is nothing to register and no email address to hand over.

Files deleted automatically

Your upload is deleted the moment processing finishes, and the result 60 minutes later. Files are not shared, published or used for anything else.

Encrypted in transit

Uploads and downloads go over HTTPS, the same encryption your bank uses in the browser.

No watermark, ever

The file you download is clean. No logo in the corner, no intro card, no "made with" frame at the end.

GIF vs MP4

File size

An MP4 of the same animation is usually 80–95% smaller.

Where it works

How GIF to MP4 conversion works

Your GIF is uploaded over HTTPS and processed on Rekreate's servers with FFmpeg. Its frames are encoded as an H.264 MP4 — or a VP9 WebM — which stores only what changes between frames instead of every frame in full. The dimensions are adjusted to even numbers and the color format set to the one every player supports, so the video plays on iPhones and in Safari as well as everywhere else.

Uploads are deleted after processing, results after 60 minutes.

How do I post a GIF on Instagram?

Convert it to MP4 here, then upload the MP4 as a post or Reel.

How much smaller will it be?

Usually 80–95% smaller than the GIF.

MP4 for apps, phones and social media. WebM for websites where you want the smallest file.

Does the video have sound?

No — the GIF had none. You can add music afterwards.

Yes, on iPhone and Android.

Why won't other GIF videos play on my iPhone?

They used a color format iPhones do not support. This converter uses the compatible one.

Is there a watermark?

No.

What is the maximum GIF size?

Up to 95 MB.

Can I convert a video to GIF instead?

Yes, with the video to GIF converter.
