FLUX.1 (August 2024) set a new bar for open image models; FLUX.1 Kontext (May 2025) added instruction-based editing with strong character consistency; and FLUX.2 (November 2025) brought 4-megapixel generation and editing with multi-reference control, followed by the fast, compact FLUX.2 [klein] in January 2026.
Rekreate uses FLUX.2 [pro] for image generation and editing and FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] for targeted edits.
- FLUX.1 (Aug 2024): [pro], [dev], [schnell] — photoreal quality and strong prompt following.
- FLUX.1 Kontext (May 2025): edit images with text while preserving characters and style.
- FLUX.2 (Nov 25, 2025): [pro], [flex], [dev], up to 4 MP, multi-reference editing, better text.
- FLUX.2 [klein] (Jan 15, 2026): 4B/9B compact models, sub-second generation.
- In Rekreate: FLUX.2 [pro] generate & edit, FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] edit.
FLUX version history
FLUX.1 [pro], [dev], [schnell]
Black Forest Labs' debut: a 12B-parameter rectified-flow transformer family. [pro] via API, [dev] open weights for non-commercial use, [schnell] fast and Apache-2.0 licensed.
FLUX1.1 [pro] and Ultra/Raw
Faster, higher-quality API model, with Ultra mode for higher resolutions and Raw mode for more natural, less polished photography.
FLUX.1 Tools
Fill (inpainting/outpainting), Depth, Canny and Redux (image variation) for controllable editing.
FLUX.1 Kontext [pro], [max], [dev] In Rekreate
In-context image generation and editing: change parts of an image with text instructions while keeping characters, objects and style consistent across edits.
FLUX.2 [pro], [flex], [dev] In Rekreate
New architecture pairing a Mistral vision-language model with a rectified-flow transformer. Generation and editing up to 4 megapixels, multi-reference inputs, better typography, color matching and identity consistency. [flex] exposes steps and guidance; [dev] is open-weight.
FLUX.2 [klein]
Compact 4B and 9B variants for consumer GPUs and interactive apps, with sub-second generation on modern hardware.
Dates from Black Forest Labs announcements and press coverage.
FLUX.2 variants compared
| Variant | Best for | Access |
|---|---|---|
| FLUX.2 [pro] | Top quality generation and editing, up to 4 MP, multi-reference | API (BFL, Azure AI Foundry, partners) |
| FLUX.2 [flex] | Tunable steps and guidance for quality/speed trade-offs, typography | API |
| FLUX.2 [dev] | Self-hosting, fine-tuning, research | Open weights (license terms apply) |
| FLUX.2 [klein] | Real-time and on-device generation | Open weights, 4B / 9B |
FLUX.2 Pro vs FLUX.1 Kontext: which to use?
- Create a new image from scratch (product hero shot, lifestyle scene, character): FLUX.2 [pro].
- Combine several references (a model + a product + a location): FLUX.2 [pro] multi-reference editing.
- Make a precise local change to an existing image — swap a color, remove an object, change the background — while leaving everything else untouched: FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] is quick and reliable.
- Lots of accurate text in the image: try FLUX.2 or Ideogram 3.0.
- Conversational edits with world knowledge: compare Nano Banana 2.
FLUX prompting tips
- Write natural descriptive sentences, not keyword lists: FLUX.2's language model understands context.
- Order matters: subject → action/pose → setting → lighting → camera/lens → style.
- Specify materials and colors precisely ("brushed aluminum", "Pantone-like coral") for product shots.
- For edits, state the change and the constraints: "Replace the background with a white studio sweep; keep the bottle, reflections and label unchanged."
- Use reference images for brand products instead of describing labels.
Example:
A matte black stainless-steel water bottle standing on wet volcanic rock beside a mountain stream, morning mist, soft backlight creating a rim highlight, 85mm lens, shallow depth of field, crisp condensation droplets, premium outdoor brand campaign photography.

Frequently asked questions
Who makes FLUX?
FLUX is developed by Black Forest Labs, an AI lab based in Freiburg, Germany, founded by former Stable Diffusion researchers.
What is the latest FLUX model?
As of September 2026 the latest generation is FLUX.2, released November 25, 2025 as [pro], [flex] and [dev], plus the compact FLUX.2 [klein] released January 15, 2026.
What is FLUX Kontext?
FLUX.1 Kontext (May 2025) is a family of models for in-context image editing: you edit an image with text instructions while characters, objects and style stay consistent.
FLUX.2 vs FLUX.1 — what changed?
FLUX.2 generates and edits at up to 4 megapixels, supports multiple reference images, renders text and colors more accurately and keeps identities more consistent, thanks to a new VLM + flow-transformer architecture.
Is FLUX free and open source?
Some variants have open weights — FLUX.1 [schnell] (Apache 2.0), FLUX.1/FLUX.2 [dev] (non-commercial license terms) and FLUX.2 [klein]. [pro] and [flex] models are paid APIs.
Can I use FLUX in Rekreate?
Yes. Rekreate offers FLUX.2 [pro] for generation and editing and FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] for precise image edits.
